Nikon wanted to chase Canon to get close to 50mp and so far all I see D850 does very little over D810. They took us to some awesome locations, brought in some sweet models and let us loose to shoot. The best cameras for under $1000 should have good ergonomics and controls, great image quality and be capture high-quality video. D850 is hammered down because it is truly a great camera, and many are envious. Sure, for those who shoot 100 photos per week 46mp is OK but I might shoot several thousand per day sometimes. But as a "photographer for over 45 years" surely you know that there is so much more to photography than just IQ. I am wholeheartedly underwhelmed by these shots.... the detail is lacking and there is nothing to compel me to upgrade. Still, focus point spread is very small. Pulling shadows is a way to preserve highlights because once you clip those (which often happens in a middle gray "correct" exposures, then that info is gone. After all, ALL cameras now are so good at image quality at decent sizes you must resort to stuff like underexposing 4 or 5 stops then pulling then looking at 100% views to see meaningful differences.....which then by definition at that point are not really meaningful differences in the real world.
